so…i kinda love design.  & by kinda, i mean definitely.  i love transforming old to new.  even if it means redoing the same thing multiple times .. (which is starting to scare my sweet husband. ; )

i believe that color, pattern, texture, placement, scale, balance, etc, are extremely important in every room, as our atmosphere/environment highly impacts us on deeper levels than we may realize …

that’s not to say that i get everything right when i design/decorate — i am definitely still learning … but … i do love to experiment & try new things, like pairing odd colors or materials together. if it doesn’t feel right, i change it. however .. despite loving the ‘odd,’ i am still drawn to neutrals & naturals … so pairing classic & traditional with unusual & quirky is also something i enjoy quite a bit. : )

in case anyone who isn’t able to visit often would like to see into our little home, i’ll be posting some ‘sneak peaks’ every now & then …. hope you enjoy!

welcome to our master bathroom:

here’s an example of trying something & changing my mind (!)

before … or, shall i say, midway:

re-using cute drawer pulls (that i used in our wedding) as towel hooks seemed like a fun idea at the time.  & honestly, i didn’t hate it … i just … changed my mind : )

after:

{click on the photo to enlarge}

by the way, i TRY to use items we already have, & just mix them up … like the frames on the walls (engagement photos by angela cox), the shelf with hooks … the owl candle, the glass bottle & tin bucket (more wedding decor), & the mirror. in fact, this is what the mirror used to look like … well, right before i spray painted it, at least:

yay for wedding gifts! we registered for these cuties at target:

i like to keep shampoos, lotions, etc, from fun places i’ve been — in this jar, there are items from all over israel, tahiti, moorea, bora bora, & others. : )

the latest edition is our jute rug/runner … i am in love with the natural elements & the texture it brings into the room.

… the next ‘project’ will probably be something on the wall over the towel rack, next to the shower curtain … and/or i may also be attempting to frame our large mirror …  there’s also my love for board & batten … or wainscoting … oh gosh … i’ll keep ya posted … ; )

so i’m still learning my way around the kitchen … one day i hope to be known for my delicious meals! but for now, i’m sticking with what i know: aesthetically pleasing. ; )

for my dad’s 50th birthday, i wanted to make him a special cake … and i found some pretty awesome inspiration from January’s Martha Stewart Living Magazine. (if you don’t get the magazine, you can check out this site for the full how-to)

for those of you who are more kitchen-experienced than i (or have more time to play than i did …) you can make your cake’s and buttercream from scratch …  the recipes for which can also be found at the link above).  i, on the other hand, was a little more pressed for time, and therefore went with boxed cake mixes and store-bought buttercream : )  also, i ordered my choice of colored m&m’s from http://www.mymms.com/

this cake was extremely fun to make and eat … but be forewarned, it takes a meticulous hand and eye … and quite a bit of time, if you’re a somewhat slow, detailed person like myself.    so if you’re willing, go for it!   i definitely recommend it, and your cake eaters/viewers will love it as well! : )

here is my process, in photos …

could art change the world?

so, i was just recently introduced to the website http://www.ted.com/ by our friend, drew. knowing i’m a creative type, he showed us this particular video, thinking we (the hubs & i) would appreciate it.

sure enough, we thought it was pretty dang awesome.  primarily due to the ingenious use of art … but also due to the fact that while we were watching the video, i was pretty sure that i recognized some of the images that JR & his crew pasted on the palestinian wall.  when i visited israel last february/march, we went into bethlehem, & i was amazed by all the beautiful graffiti & art work that people have put on the wall. i randomly shot some of the images … & sure enough, i snapped some of JR’s photos.  below are my photos. & if you don’t have time to watch the whole video (which i totally recommend doing), at least check out a little bit of it, starting around 5:30….

enjoy.  but more importantly, be inspired… : )
